As a result of William’s excellent work, exemplary attitude to learning, commitment to academic pursuits beyond the classroom, and the standard he has set himself throughout the Third Form at Wellington, we are delighted to announce he has been awarded a Named Scholarship – The Governors’ Scholarship.

Although a handful of academic scholarships are awarded prior to entry at Wellington, the majority of the scholarships and the most prestigious named scholarships are awarded at the end of the third form, following a rigorous process that focuses on curiosity and engagement in lessons and academic extension. The selection committee was impressed with William’s performance in all of these elements, and he was recognised as one of the most promising pupils in the cohort. This is a huge testament to both William and the wonderful preparation for this stage of his education that he received at Dulwich Prep London.

As one of the Scholars, he will benefit from the academic scholarship programme throughout his time at Wellington College. The programme aims to foster intellectual curiosity and humility while encouraging our scholars to consider a more interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving and debate. Wellington College aims to encourage a sense of belonging to the programme combined with genuine fun and fulfilment from learning.

Next year’s academic scholarship programme starts with a residential at Cambridge University over the summer, featuring a jam-packed schedule of talks and workshops with leading academics aimed at inspiring and challenging our most able pupils.

The programme also includes a cycling tour of the city, punting along the College backs, and a chance to try rowing, which surely should be central to any Cambridge experience. During term time, the Scholars attend a weekly session with three colleagues from different faculties, encouraging an interdisciplinary approach that can so often be stifled within the constraints of a normal school timetable.

During the Michaelmas Term of the Fourth Form, this will involve a series of short courses around the central theme of ‘Epistemic Insight’, as well as public speaking workshops culminating in a balloon debate.

In January, William will have the opportunity to represent Wellington College at the Youth Forum Switzerland. This will be the third year they have taken our Fourth Form Scholars to this brilliant event, which provides a platform for students to explore issues and connect with global changemakers. Students will also work with pupils from all over the world through a series of discussions and hands-on impact labs.

Congratulations, Mr William Webster, on being the recipient of The Governors’ Scholarship! We look forward with great anticipation to witnessing the remarkable impact you will undoubtedly have in the days ahead. We extend our sincere best wishes for continued success in all your future pursuits. Bravo, William!
