During WW2 the school was evacuated to Betws-y-Coed in North Wales where the boys took an active part in the war effort - growing vegetables in the school's allotment, younger boys collected firewood to keep the school warm and save on coal while the older ones worked with the Forestry Commission, others collected hips to make Vitamin C, made camouflage netting, collected paper, card and used metal, entertained the wounded soldiers recovering at the Waterloo Hotel as well as raising over £4,000 in the Savings Scheme for the war effort whilst still maintaining the bed at King's.
