In 1998 Richard Witts had the idea of raising money by organisng a 24 hour run on the school field at Grange Lane. All those taking part would be supported by sponsors for the number of laps they completed, and there would be at least one person on the track, carrying a baton, at any one monent. Almost at once the idea became known as the Fun Run and pupils, parents and staff all entered into the spirit of the occasion.
Richard Witts described the support as 'totally unexpected and the result startingly successfull' as over £28,000 was raised. The last lap was run at noon on Saturday by Phil de Glanville, a former Prep pupil, and at the time Captain of the England XV, who gave his car keys to Richard Witts for safe keeping.
de Glanville stayed on to present the prizes at Sport's Day which followed on that afternoon. Meanwhile Richard Witts, elated and weary from the events of the previous 24 hours, had slipped quietly away to play cricket in Kent - with the keys in his pocket and no mobile phone! With some clever Sherlock Holmes detective work and the co-operation of the Kent police the keys were returned. to their owner.
